A typical conversation

We’re in the grocery store school supplies aisle, and Ian is picking out a notebook and some pens for his last three months of school as an apprentice wireman (inside electrician). A woman with a cart are blocking the pens.

Me: Let’s just come back in a few minutes, hon

Ian: Nah, it’s okay

Me: No really, I think I smell something *wrinkles nose*

Ian: Oh yeah? *smirking*

Me: Ugh, what is that? Is that you?!? What’s wrong with you? Are you sick?

Ian: Nope, but now we’ve got the school supplies aisle to ourselves, don’t we, babe! *looks proud of himself*

Question: Why are men proud of their farts, especially the really raunchy ones?

The In-Laws Are Coming!

They’re on their way up from Valdez, AK to spend the weekend with us. This will be the first time that they’ve seen our house, which we moved into at the beginning of October. The drive is about 370 miles, and the roads are bad today. I hope that they make it in safely.

If you’ve never been to Valdez, where my husband, Ian grew up, you should visit! It is truly one of the most gorgeous places on earth. Here are a few of my pictures from different visits:

This is Prince William Sound, near Valdez.

This is Worthington Glacier, on Thompson Pass, on the road into Valdez.
This is an image of me standing at the top of Thompson Pass a few years ago.

Well, I’m guessing that some of you have been watching the Olympics as much as I have. And NBC has been hyping their new show Conviction to no end. And the song keeps getting stuck in my head. So today I looked it up, and it is by The Gabe Dixon Band, and best of all, you can download it for free (it is legal) here:

All Will Be Well

Isn’t that the coolest? That’s my present to you today, internet. Enjoy.

An outing and the cutest moose cookie ever

My mother, as most mothers do, considers food the best therapy. Knowing that since my surgery I’ve lost around ten pounds simply because I haven’t been hungry, or have felt too unwell to eat, she decided to take me to lunch. Thus, instead of cleaning the house in preparation for my in-laws arrival tomorrow, I found myself sitting at a small cafe table with my Mom and 16 year old sister. As a final treat after our meal, she bought me the cutest cookie ever. It has a moose and some snow covered spruce trees, and seems more a work of art than a cookie! Can you see the grass in its mouth? How great is that?!?
How could I refuse? And you know what, I did feel better afterwards. I know that I’m loved, and that I’m important to her. Thanks Mom, for everything.

Struggling

I’ve been struggling with depression since I was a teenager, and lately things have been getting me down. I’ve also been on various antidepressants since I was 19, although I’m currenly in the process of weaning myself off of Effexor. It seems inexorably slow right now, but I’m sure that it will be worthwhile, since Ian and I really want to have a baby, and I’m not comfortable being on an antidepressant while pregnant, although my OBGYN insists that it’s safe.

Today is the first day that I haven’t had the chills since I started cutting my dosage, and it’s been a godsend. I’ve done laundry, cleaned the kitchen, and picked up the assorted bits of flotsam that seem to accumulate around the house any time that I’m not feeling well. I’ve even updated my blog. Twice! I’m so proud… finally, I don’t feel so exhausted and sick that I can’t do anything. I hope and pray that tomorrow is as good of a day as today was.

Here’s a great picture that I came upon while websurfing – a poodle sled dog team, and in full continental clip, no less! Every time that I look at it, it makes me smile, so I thought I’d share. Enjoy.

Life, an update

Hi there, to all three of my readers! Thanks for stopping by.

First of all, the endo surgery went very well. My doctor insists that he cut all of the endo out of my abdomen and thinks that I should be fine now. He was way too optimistic about recovery though – the simple laparoscopy wiped me out for nearly a week. Or maybe I’m just a wimp.

On another note, now that it’s not freezing, my dog (Bobby, an oversized, funny shaped toy poodle, for those of you who don’t know) has decided that he LOVES it outside, and insists on going out every 10 or 15 minutes. Here’s the most recent photo of him on our back porch.
Here also is a nice picture of a recent sunset up here. At this time of year they start to get really gorgeous. Sorry for the power lines in the way – they’re hard to get away from in our neighborhood.

Oh, and I promise to start writing more frequently. Really.

Endo Surgery

So here I go – off to surgery for endometriosis this morning at *gasp* 6:30 am. I’m a bit freaked out by the idea of surgery, but it’s only laparoscopic (a little lighted tube with the ability to nip off bits of flesh and then cauterize), so it shouldn’t be too bad. But to someone who’s only other surgery was a wimpy (easiest the dentist had ever done) wisdom tooth exctraction, it’s a big deal. Here’s a picture of the scope they’ll be using:
Doesn’t that look like fun? I’ll let you know afterwards if it was…

Here it is – complete with answers to all of your burning questions.

Four (crappy) jobs I’ve had
1. Greeter at the crappy Fred Meyer that had just opened (and is now closed) – “Hello, would you like a map of the grocery store?” and “The restrooms are thataway” Ugh.
2. Tour guide on the Alaskaland Railroad. (1 mile of track, circled at least three billion times a day) “On your right you can see the playground, and then the Palace Saloon…”
3. Waitress at the Princess Hotel. The food was overpriced, the liquor was watered down, and the waitresses were bitchy. This job singlehandedly convinced me that I needed to go to grad school.
4. Research Assistand at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Water and Environmental Research Center. Finally, a job that I don’t dread going to every day.

Four movies I can watch over and over
1. Shrek and Shrek 2 (but mostly Shrek 2 – I think it’s funnier)
2. Amelie
3. The Princess Bride
4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Four places I have lived

1. Nucla, CO, in a trailer, as a baby
2. Fairbanks, AK as a kid
3. Eugene, OR in college
4. Fairbanks, AK now with my husband, our poodle Bobby, in our new house

Four TV shows I love
1. NOVA. I love to learn. Especially when I can do it from my couch.
2. Coupling, on BBC.
3. Real World/Road Rules Challenges. Ah, the drama.
4. American Idol auditions. I don’t give a crap about the actual competition, but I love to hear people who sound like crap embarass themselves on national television.

Four places I’ve vacationed
1. Costa Azul resort, San Pancho, Nayarit, Mexico. Our honeymoon was great, except for the monster roach. But that’s another story.
2. Washington, D.C. in the middle of the hot, humid, hellish summer.
3. Telluride, CO
4. Kennecott, AK.

Four of my favorite dishes
1. Ian’s Asian Chicken Salad
2. Chicken masala
3. Pad Thai Pak
4. Salt bagels

Four sites I visit daily
1. Dooce
2. Ninja Poodles
3. Nome Wells (my remote research site)
4. jenandtonic

Four places I would rather be right now
1. Asleep in my bed at home.
2. Anywhere that isn’t -20F. It’s fucking cold up here!
3. Somewhere with sunlight. I miss sunlight.
4. On vacation. Anywhere. I mean it – anywhere. You think of a crappy place, and as long as I don’t have to work while I’m there, I’m game.
